!!! Where can I begin?? I think that it´s all down to practice, practice and experimentation. I could go into great length as to how i paint, but this is from a few years of practice and learning new things like types of paint, how to mix colours and use different layers of colour to achieve effects, and someone else would say they do it a different way, not necessarily a completely different way but one thing in their painting method would lead to a different result.
Of coures there are basic tips...clean brushes, learn to blend the 3 base colours before going out and buying a whole range of oddly named colours and finding that mixing blue and yellow will actually produe "snot green". and how to hold figs for painting.
How much painting have you done??? (weeks, years?)
